Beatrix Potter
I’ve had a long-standing admiration for Beatrix Potter. Her work as both a writer and artist have brought me much pleasure. But did you know she was also very skilled in mycology (fungi), general science, sheep breeding, and conservation? Upon her death in 1943, she bequeathed some 4,000 acres and 15 working farms to the National Trust, ensuring the continuation of untouched land in the famous Lake District. This is where we went today. Her home, Hill Top, has been preserved and is open to the public. It was wonderful. And who hasn’t heard of Peter Rabbit getting caught in a gooseberry while a sparrow flew to him and “implored him to exert himself”. That’s when I’d say to my kids he begged him to try harder! The Gingerbread Bakery
This bakery is located in Ambleside. It used to be the old school next to the church. The school operated from 1660 to 1854. The building is still the same. Ambleside is where Wordsworth lived and is a very beautiful busy village in the Lake District. We stayed 4 miles or so up the road in Grasmere. The shop is so small we had to line up and go in single file and place our order.
Poet Wordsworth
William Wordsworth loved the Lake District and lived here for many years. He is buried in the church graveyard under a beautiful yew tree.
